RootCandy Drupal Admin theme

Another update on this. I am slowly getting where I want to get. :)

screenshot

I also forgot to mention that rootCandy theme is available from drupal.org: http://drupal.org/project/rootcandy
(NOTE: latest tarball not yet available 21/02)

I have attached latest cvs version for those who wants to try it right now

What's new:
New module, currently called rootcandy is shipped together with this theme. It would be nice if drupal can look into all directories and fetch modules inside themes based on info files so you don't have to copy the module from theme dir to modules dir.

Anyways, this module has callback rootcandy/% which is called by ajax. Then it serves plain content. So main menu is now ajaxed.

Secondary menu has been styled.
And also some fixes.

I am developing under firefox, so don't know how it looks under ieX or others, I will try to adjust it once the basic functionality will be in.

What's the plan now?
In next update I want to finish off the navigation. All ajax and it should degrade nicely if no javascript is available.

Add some more functionality such as hot keys, and pop up windows with history or bookmarks within admin area.

Also there will be a need of a overview page and /admin page.

Icons needs replacing as they are not under GPL licence... :S

Got some emails asking if I will implement admin menu module. No I won't. But it will work together with this theme, however I will try to make the navigation as easy as possible so there won't be need for admin menu module ;)

Any ideas? Keep'em coming ;)

Theme looks great. I'll play

Theme looks great. I'll play with it for couple of days.

You have started a subject that intrigues me for some time. Whenever you decide to create a feature rich theme, you'll also need a helper module to support it.
To the best of my knowledge, there is currently no facility for this in Drupal. For instance, there is no way to specify if theme requires some modules.

Btw, I've noticed that javascript for rounded corners produce corners with white as background.

tipping point

This looks really great! I'll give the theme a try when I get back from Fosdem.

I think this admin theme could be the tipping point for Drupal not just for actual usability, but for perceived usability and accessibility. This is something that Joomla/Mambo got right from the start: it looks easy, even if it isn't all that simple once you dig down deeper.

I really hope this grows into a great D6 module/theme so that it can be considered for inclusion in D7, maybe as an install profile.

Nice work...

I like what you're doing with the admin theme. Navigating Drupal's administration is terrifying as a text-only exercise - hopefully those icons will make finding the right part of /admin easier!

I have created an issue for enabling drupal to search for modules within themes: http://drupal.org/node/225274 :)
I know about that rounded corners, thats something i will fix later. ;)

Icon license

If you know who is author of the icons, why don't you try to ask him if he is willing to give you permission to use them under GPL.
I have already done that and my experience is that most people from open source world will give you permission gladly.

From what it says on Tango

From what it says on Tango icon homepage:
The Tango base icon theme is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license. The palette is in public domain. Developers, feel free to ship it along with your application. The icon naming utilities are licensed under the GPL.

Use of icons from the tango-icon-theme module must be attributed to the Tango Desktop Project.

hotkey already done

Hi,

Please don't reimplement the hotkey concept - Just re-use the module that has already been built: http://drupal.org/project/hotkey

We have too many duplicate modules already. It's always sad to see more created.

Actually not trying to

Actually not trying to reimplement it, i know about this module, i will still need to have a module which will output datas I want to see in a hotkeyed popup. And again, it would be worth discussing theme <-> module dependencies though

What I had in mind is

What I had in mind is writing the message/mail to Tango or directly to Hylke Bons or whoever authored the icons and ask them politely to give you permission to use the icons under GPL. However, Oxygen icons look good, so I guess it does not matter any more.

Yea I knew, I went thru some

Yea I knew, I went thru some threads about licencing Tango icons. And then I gave up, as few of the people were struggling too. Then found oxygen, which works. :)
