A Design System is the single source of truth which groups all the elements that will allow the teams to design, realise and develop a product. With Design Systems becoming a key part of everyday work, it is becoming more apparent that, in the future, every brand and every product will use a Design System. Whether simple or comprehensive, strict or loose, mono or cross platforms...

Join us for a fantastic evening of theoretical insight, case studies, networking and more!

We'll be joined by;

Chris Thelwell - Design Director - EY Seren

Martin Dowson - Head of Design Language and Design Operations - Lloyds Banking Group

Inayaili de León - Senior Designer - Microsoft

TALKS AND DISCUSSIONS

Chris Thelwell - Design Director - EY Seren

Chris has been a digital product designer working globally for many years. Juggling award-winning F1 projects, Google Chrome apps, with consulting for some of the biggest companies in the world and the occasional European football championship. An outcome focused design leader, Chris specialises in disrupting markets, creating innovative new digital products and building high-performing design teams.

In his talk, Chris will explore decision frameworks and their vital role in any design system. With a focus on deciding what to design and when it’s ready to ship, he’ll share some of his favourite techniques with real world examples.

Martin Dowson - Head of Design Language and Design Operations - Lloyds Banking Group

Martin is a Design Leader at Lloyds Banking Group, together with Chief Design Officer Dan Makoski, they are on a mission to ‘Design for Prosperity. Martin leads the ResearchOps, DesignOps and Design Language teams that will support this ambitious and unifying vision. Previously Martin led LBG’s Design Research and Foresight team helping the Bank to understand life in Britain both now and in the next 10 years, de-risking strategy with design-led approaches to problem solving and developing a deeper empathy for customer needs.

Inayaili de León - Senior Designer - Microsoft

Inayaili de León is a Senior Designer at Microsoft Developer Services. Previously, she led the team creating Canonical’s Vanilla design system. She writes frequently for well-known online publications and on her own blog, and speaks at international conferences. She’s the co-author of “Pro CSS for High Traffic Websites” (Apress, 2011), and author of “Moving to Responsive Web Design” (Apress, 2016). She’s Panamanian Portuguese, born in the USSR, and lives in London.

A design system can only survive and flourish when it meets the needs of its users, and evolves alongside the product. For that to happen, the system needs to be open to accept ideas and participation from members outside the core design system team. In this talk, Inayaili will give tips on how to can encourage people to participate and contribute to a design system, and what processes to put in place to make things easy for those that want to help.
